#Exvangelical: Healthy Reformation or Disturbing Trend? with Anne Kennedy
Anne Kennedy joins the podcast to talk about her observations about the Exvangelical movement, and what she identifies as a lack of respect for elders and theological incuriosity. She and Alisa also discuss certain themes within Exvangelicalism such as the phrase "white evangelical church" and what role Evangelical support of Donald Trump plays in deconstruction. She also discusses her role in the Anglican split over LGBTQ issues and what concerning trends she sees today in the Evangelical church.

While researching our recent book, Tim and I discovered that common reasons people cited for their deconstruction included issues such as "Christians oppressing homosexuals" and support for political figures like Donald Trump. When someone asserts that Christianity oppresses homosexuals, it often comes with a set of cultural and philosophical assumptions. To address this complex topic, Dr. Carl...

    Being easily deceived is basic human nature and is built into our DNA. It is impossible for deceived human beings to have "Free Will". Without "Free Will" christianity is a lie. Observe the fact of how many millions of people believe Trump won the last election. Think about that!! A current event and reality that has deceived millions even though information and facts are readily available to the majority of the world. Now apply that reality to a story that took place thousands of years ago when people had no information available to them except the information provided by priests! This reality about human nature makes christianity's stories and promises irrelevant especially in regards to "free will". "Free will" is an impossibility when it comes to humanities penchant for deception. Being easily deceived is "basic" human nature! "Free Will" can't exist in those who have been deceived! If human beings were designed with this overwhelming flaw then the story of christ is irrelevant. Why do you think a god whose existence relies upon the "free will" argument would take away our "free will" by designing us to be easily deceived? Flying planes into buildings, forcing raped 10 year old little girls to give birth, voting for Trump all come from the exact same place...embracing deception. So the next time you watch as christians' support those that deny the science of climate change or evolution or vote for those that do nothing about gun violence or vote for those that give even more tax breaks to billionaires at the expense of the well being of the world...remember it was all brought to you by the lie of christ!

    Judging by the last 40+ yrs in the USA this question answers itself. Y’all need to do some more serious digging on the false teaching, false prophets and greed for filthy lucre driving these movements going back to at least the mid-1800’s to grasp the present moment. A surface discussion of even an hr+ of vague “deconstruction” or a mildly wayward evangelical error will inevitably miss by a country mile if not rooted in the historical context. Ps. I don’t give critique without direction. Anyone who cares should follow the work of “William Branham historical research podcast”, the SPLC, ) Cult Watch” to name few. More “secular” researchers are doing a better job in many cases; (wolves don’t watch hen houses reliably).

    What bothers me about this conversation is that these ladies have a certain “nice” smugness in that they believe that they alone possess what the truth is, how the Bible should be interpreted (which isn’t divinely inspired), and have the only biblical view on all things spiritual; that if you disagree, say on the ordination of women, you need to repent or you may not have a seat at the table of the lamb. There’s a wideness in God’s mercy, and thankfully, he will decide, not you. As a former evangelical (age 69!) who stills loves and worships Jesus (in a spirit-filled mainline church), I don’t miss the condescending attitudes, the measuring to see if if one is evangelical enough, the assumption that those who have reconstructed their faith are hell-bound, etc. I’d like to hear more, “This is what I think, but I may be wrong and I can learn from you.” In other words, humility. And for what it’s worth, every one of the many reconstructed people I know have expressed gratitude for various aspects of their conservative upbringing, particularly for the emphasis on biblical knowledge.

    • @leannejohnson3305
      @leannejohnson3305 Годину тому

      @@kathykardashian7750 Actually, reconstruction is the rebuilding after deconstruction. I prefer the term because that’s what happens and because the word deconstruction has become synonymous (in conservative Christianity anyway) with back sliding down the dreaded slippery slope into God knows what. Every serious Christian realizes at different times that their views of God or their understanding of a piece of scripture needs to be adjusted because they were mistaken. Happens most Sundays in church. We listen, learn, deconstruct, then reconstruct. As the Presbyterians say, always reforming.

    Since 1984 there has been a horrible truth about "Evangelicals." Not all of course, but many, many have been testing the waters of eastern mysticism, Roman Catholic mysticism and even some base pagan magic. It's a sick and twisted reality. Much of this started with that evil Evangelical and Catholics together treaty from the 1980's. There have been some major apologetics writers falling for the demon pushed eucharist of the Roman Catholics. Roger Oakland, Ray Yungen, and Dave Hunt have written in detail about this trend. As a disciple I'm not surprised by the great falling away, but I am concerned about the great number of Emergent churches that are devouring the West. I own Haley's Bible Handbook, 1965 non Billy Graham edition which list dates and names of the down fall of the Church of Rome through the Roman influence. The specific time it stopped being a church of Jesus'. The "Evangelicals" who have turned their backs on Jesus and embraced paganism and mysticism will get their rewards indeed, but for the people who are searching for Jesus actual, it's just heart breaking. I refuse to lable myself as an Evangelical, Protestant and definitely not Catholic. I am a disciple of Jesus Christ as He Himself called us to be. All these varied names: Catholic, Lutheran, Calvinist, Baptist etc. Are divisive and NOT what Jesus called us to be. I'm done with mans opinion when scripture is clear and precise. People who pick and choose what it does or does not say are not disciples. They may call themselves "Christians" but they are not disciples.

    Great conversation. I think the bottom line is realizing The big lie and the main attack of the enemy is not against us directly it is against God himself and his word and his laws. They are declaring God racist, oppressive and a liar . Every thing God says is oppressive. They say God set us up and made us either racists opressors white privdleged or victims of racism oppression. All his commands are oporessive. They are making themselves to be gods. They take on identies ungodly . Genders , wrap themselves in their personal stories or historys. Lovers of selves over lovers of God. God is not a respector of persons. We are all sinners and need Jesus. They want power pay back revenge . Even when Jesus says forgive thoses who tresspass against us is oppressive. They have no forgiveness. The goals are Marxist dethrone God turn everyone immoral , legalize drugs, abortion destroy marriage destroy the family steal our money and redistribute it . Defund police destroy law and order no more mothers fathers brothers sisters. Envy , coveting lying is good . Tear down b our borders . Burn America to the ground which is built on Gods word and 10 comnandents as they Its rscist . Its all connected . Isn!'t it.

    The first thing I always go back to is how the Internet amplifies things that are happening. One way this happens is through echo chambers. In other words, people who have done or are in the process of doing this seek each other out and it speeds the process. My point is that because this has a strong online component, is it truly evangelical or is it a bunch of people with a similar bend finding each other? I read an interesting article about how, since DonaldTrump, instead of making the term evangelical radioactive, it expanded it. It goes on to explain how the term was always linked with a conservative theological bend, but has expanded to someone who devoutly practices anything. Donald Trump is an excuse for this. Figuring out what you believe is fine, but don’t pin it on a person. Here are the reasons. The first is that his attitude, demeanor, and down to his accent is very characteristic of someone from New York City. I grew up in the part of NJ that was close to NYC. We had a phrase, “typical New York,” and he’s every stereotype that phrase entails, including aggression. People react to that emotionally. It’s not something to speak out against. It’s how people from NYC are. The second thing, I always recommend people put their personal feelings aside when it comes to Trump. There were a few things I did. The first was I separated things about Trump and what the news media was saying about him. Something I did was look up what he said or did and find out that, when it wasn’t completely misconstrued , it was far more tepid than it was made out to be. You don’t have to be enamored with Trump to see the caricature. I never felt the need to idealize him or make him a villian. I shows how black-and-white people think. Although, I have th say that some of the legend the Left created around Trump is quite funny and a testament to what blind hatred can cause you to believe. Ian Fleming couldn’t have written a better Bond villain. Trust me, there’s a difference between necessary critique and blind hatred. So, if you peel the layers of the onion of caricature away, what do you have? You have an ‘80s and 90s style Democrat. His actual policies and positions are similar to the conservative, “Blue Dog” Dems. This group is best described as fiscally conservative and apathetic-to-left-leaning on social issues. He was for gay marriage before any politician did. He believed it should be legal for fiscal and asset sharing reasons. I had no problem with voting for him as long as it wasn’t an idealized version of him which is as fake as the Bond villain version of him. Evangelicals got undue notice for voting Trump in due to preexisting caricatures and people being stuck in the 90s politically. If you look at the New Right, it’s people Trump brought into the party, and they’re people who aren’t traditionally Republican. Many were on the Left. I look no further than arch conservative…. Rosanne Barr. See my point? There’s a political sea change afoot that no one wants to admit is happening. The ex-liberals tend to see him in the realistic way I do. The Left changed. Oh, they’re not crazy about traditional Republicans, either. I do wonder, based on rhetoric, if these are not closet Leftists.The clue is that they see everything through the lens of power which is the way Foucault saw things. He saw humans as with a part of the group with power or the group without power. It’s what postmodernism turns on. It’s why I call him the heartbeat of postmodernism. It’s a cultural critique, not a religious one. It’s also the heart of Leftist Critical Social Justice thought. Their arguments tend to be vague or emotional. It’s taken on faith that everything is done with the goal of gaining power. There’s also a self-aggrandizing factor to this ideology that I sense here. They tend to be so absolutely convinced of their right-ness that it doesn’t dawn on them that they may be wrong an lead them to assume so much while defending so little. Final note: The hypocrisy charge gets repeated without knowing where it comes from. It stems from the perceived slight of Bill Clinton during the Monica Lewinsky thing. They conveniently forget that he was impeached for perjury, not the affair itself. To be fair, though, it was a lot sexier (no pun intended) and eye-catching for the 24-hour news cycle to discuss a blue dress with cum on it than on the ins-and-outs of perjury (snore). My observations are correct, even it they’re uncomfortable. I’ve followed this since 2016.

      Jesus Christ is the truth, but you're right: as soon as you embrace a particular faith church (yes, alas, a "cult" though not necessarily a cult where the pastor takes all your assets and sleeps with your wife) you necessarily enter both truth and falsehood. But not to enter a particular faith church is to enter a non church secularist cult, but still a cult. Embracing a church cult (Anglican, Baptist, Pentecostal, etc) is the best choice of all the options if you want your life to have meaning. But you're right, you'll be in a cult which embraces both truth and falsehood, not matter what. This "truth" is powerfully depicted in the recent move Dune (especially Dune Part 2). Highly recommended.

    There is no such thing as a white or black churches. There is no such thing as exvangelical. It’s racism to divide churches into ethicists. Christ doesn’t care about your color. Well said Anne 60 When many of his disciples heard it, they said, "This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?" 61 But Jesus, knowing in himself that his disciples were grumbling about this, said to them, "Do you take offense at this? 62 Then what if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before? 63 It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. 64 But there are some of you who do not believe." (For Jesus knew from the beginning who those were who did not believe, and who it was who would betray him.) 65 And he said, "This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father." 66 After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him. 67 So Jesus said to the twelve, "Do you want to go away as well?" 68 Simon Peter answered him, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, 69 and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God." 70 Jesus answered them, "Did I not choose you, the twelve? And yet one of you is a devil." 71 He spoke of Judas the son of Simon Iscariot, for he, one of the twelve, was going to betray him. (John 6:60, ESV)

    About Christians and Trump, I think it might help if Christians would be more vocal against him. I'm a Christian from the UK who's lived in the USA for 14 years, and I was horrified when he was elected. My son is now atheist because he sees Christians as not living out the love of God.

      Not sure Christians vote for Trump to be their priest or a golf buddy. It’s obvious that Trump is an adulterer and says things most people wouldn’t say out loud. But the funny thing is that Christians are willing to vote for a career cheater over the “anti-Christian” and “anti-God” Democrat Party. Joe Biden isn’t a follower of Christ. At least he’s displaying it. Their political platform promote all anti-God everything. I don’t donate or attend trump’s rallies…ever. Neither do I wear his MAGA clothing. But if we are being honest Trump is a better candidate for president. I’m also not sure he’s a believer. I’m praying for both. Only God changes the heart of unbelievers including atheists. My father was a pastor and was an adulterer and an abuser during the week. My father isn’t my god. I never put my trust in him, I belong to Christ. Praying your son and my adult children hear God’s voice.

    The love of Jesus, His call to us, is to preach Truth, His Gospel...BUT NEVER to spend time with the sinner in the middle of their pagan life...the obedience is to preach repentance, new birth, holiness and persevere until the end to be saved. Tolerance of sin is not part of Jesus Gospel. Beware! If the sinner repent and give fruits of this repentance, be embraced, if not then in the most compassionate love explain to him that hell is coming for those in sin. Ephesians 5:27 explains clearly the type of church Jesus comes to pick up: a holy glorious church, stainless and with no wrinkle.

    20:23 If you look at an interlinear comparison of Hosea 6:6 and compare the Hebrew word that "mercy" is gotten from, that Hebrew word is 'hesed', which means a loving loyalty, faithfulness to a relationship. Some translations of Hosea 6:6 actually say loyalty and not mercy. So mercy isn't the most accurate word to use. God desires our love and loyalty, not sacrifice. He desires our hearts.
